The sister of Minnesota Timberwolves forward Naz Reid was shot and killed in New Jersey on Saturday morning, authorities confirmed.
Toraya Reid , 28, was found near the exit of an apartment building in Jackson Township around 11 am, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, the Ocean county prosecutor ’s office said. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police swiftly arrested Shaquille Green, 29, who prosecutors said had been in a relationship with Toraya . He was charged with murder and unlawful possession of a firearm and is currently being held at Ocean County Jail pending a detention hearing. Authorities did not immediately clarify whether the two lived together.
Family in Shock
The tragedy has devastated the Reid family, who hail from nearby Asbury Park . Naz, 26, who recently signed a $125 million contract extension with the Timberwolves , has often credited his older sister with guiding and protecting him during his childhood.
“She treats us like she’s our parent,” he told Mpls St Paul Magazine in 2023.
Their youngest sister, Jakahya Reid, posted a heartbreaking tribute on Facebook, asking for privacy while expressing disbelief.
“We always send our condolences and say we could never imagine ourselves in that situation….. and yet here I am. Facing the unimaginable,” she wrote. “I’ll never get over this. I’ll never forgive God for taking you away from me.”
Remembering Toraya
All three siblings — Naz, Toraya, and Jakahya — attended Roselle Catholic High School in northern New Jersey. While Naz made his name on the basketball court, Toraya preferred softball, and their father coached football.
As investigators work through the case, community members and fans alike have rallied behind the Reid family, sending condolences as they grieve the loss of a woman remembered as both a sister and a second parent figure.
