Guwahati: A significant operation by North East Frontier Railway authorities led to the confiscation of 10 pistols and more than 200 ammunition rounds at railway stations in Agartala and Guwahati on Thursday night.
During routine inspection of 14620 UP Tripura Sundari Express at Agartala station, RPF officials discovered two abandoned bags on the upper berth of a vacant general coach. The search revealed 8 pistols and 16 magazines inside the bags.
At Guwahati station, following specific intelligence, railway police conducted a detailed inspection of Coach No. H1 in Train No. 15909 DN Avadh Assam Express upon arrival. They recovered two illicit 7.65 mm pistols and 40 rounds of ammunition from Jamir Hussain, who resides in Khagarigan village, Sonitpur district.
"Our vigilant team acted promptly on credible intelligence and conducted a thorough search operation that resulted in arrest of Jamir Hussain," said Abhishek Bodo, OC of Guwahati railway police station. Bodo added, "From our preliminary investigation, we found out that these smuggled weapons are manufactured in Nagaland's Dimapur and recovery of these sophisticated weapons demonstrates the importance of intelligence-based action in preventing potential criminal activities."
Bodo stated, "Guwahati Railway Police (GRP) registered a case under section 25(1A) of the Arms Act, 1959 against accused Jamir Hussain and have initiated a comprehensive investigation to trace the origin of the weapons and identify possible accomplices. Jamir Hussain has been taken into custody and is currently undergoing interrogation to determine the source and intended destination of the illegal firearms."
A Guwahati Railway Police station official said the confiscated pistols were of superior quality and possibly connected to a regional smuggling organisation. The presence of ammunition with the weapons indicated readiness for use, raising security concerns about their intended application.
