It's finals day at both the Shanghai Masters and the Wuhan Open. Over in Wuhan, it's an all-American contest as countrywomen and former doubles partners Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula face off for the title. Gauff got revenge over Jasmine Paolini in Saturday's semi-final after the Italian had beaten her in their last three meetings, while Pegula survived a rollercoaster match to hand Aryna Sabalenka her first ever loss at the tournament. The world No. 1 previously had a 20-0 record in Wuhan.
Over in Shanghai, it's the fairytale final we never expected as two cousins will meet in the biggest match of their lives. Valentin Vacherot, a qualifier ranked down at No. 204 in the world, earned his best-ever win over a hampered Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals. Then, he stood in the stands to watch his cousin, world No. 54 Arthur Rinderknech, defeat Daniil Medvedev, and ran down to the court so they could share a tearful hug. Now, the family members will face off to see who will be crowned a Masters 1000 champion.
Both tournaments have been a survival of the fittest, with players retiring and needing medical help while competing through brutally hot and humid conditions. Britain's Emma Raducanu was forced to call it quits in her opening match at the Wuhan Open, and she has since confirmed that she visited the doctors to help her recover.
And Magdalena Frech, who lost in the round of 16, has also taken issue with the conditions. In an impassionated statement, the world No. 53 said: "It's no longer a tennis match, just a fight for survival."
