Huge Canary Islands tourism boost as Tenerife to get 'new' £150m 3-lane motorway

Tenerife is set for a significant infrastructure boost with the construction of a new three-lane motorway, part of a major expansion of the island's main TF-1 highway.

According to the Department of Public Works, Housing and Mobility, the project represents an investment of €175.4 million (around £150 million) and is expected to take 42 months to complete. The works aim to improve road capacity, ease congestion, and enhance safety on one of the most heavily used routes in the Canary Islands.

The upgrade will focus on the Oroteanda-Las Américas stretch, a crucial section linking several key urban and tourist areas in southern Tenerife.

The TF-1 is the island's primary motorway, connecting the south airport, coastal resorts, and major towns.

With traffic increasing steadily in recent years, particularly around tourist zones, the expansion is seen as vital for maintaining mobility and supporting local economic growth.

The construction will begin just after junction 64 in Las Chafiras (San Miguel) and continue beyond junction 73 for Playa de Las Américas in the municipality of Arona, partially extending into Adeje.

The project includes adding a third lane in both directions and redesigning several busy junctions, including Parque de la Reina, Guaza, Los Cristianos, and Las Américas.

In addition, the road linking Los Cristianos to the South Hospital (TF-28) will be widened into two separate carriageways with two lanes each, providing direct access between the hospital and the TF-1.

The plan, prepared by FHECOR Ingenieros Consultores S.A. and Trazas Ingeniería S.L., has passed all technical and environmental reviews.

Officials say the project will reduce travel times, improve road safety, and strengthen connectivity between residential and tourist areas across southern Tenerife.

They added that the motorway expansion forms part of a broader strategy to improve transport infrastructure, meet growing mobility demands, and enhance quality of life for both residents and visitors.

The remaining section of the TF-1 expansion, between Las Chafiras and Granadilla, is still awaiting final approval before construction can begin.
