Liverpool FC issue statement after car crashes into fans during title parade

Liverpool have confirmed they remain in contact with Merseyside Police and have issued their support to those "who have been affected by this serious incident".

A whilst they took part in the club's title-winning parade. Around 800,000 supporters packed the streets to salute their heroes on an open-top bus, but celebration turned to horror when a car ploughed into fans on Water Street. A man has been arrested following the incident.

Footage, which has seen by The Mirror, shows a vehicle mowing down a number of pedestrians. They were then stopped with people able to open the doors to the car after it had come to a stop.

The police and several ambulances attended the scene. The air ambulance was also cleared but It is still unclear as to how many people have been injured.

The Premier League champions have been quick to address the incident and said: "We are in direct contact with regarding the incident on Water Street which happened towards the end of the trophy parade earlier this evening. Our thoughts and prayers are with those who have been affected by this serious incident. We will continue to offer our full support to the emergency services and local authorities who are dealing with this incident."

The Premier League have said: "Everyone at the Premier League is shocked by the appalling events in this evening, and our heartfelt thoughts go out to all those injured and affected. We have been in contact with Liverpool FC and have offered our full support following this serious incident."

Prime minister Sir has labelled the scene in as "appalling" as the Labour leader came out to condemn the incident as he said: "The scenes in Liverpool are appalling — my thoughts are with all those injured or affected. I want to thank the police and emergency services for their swift and ongoing response to this shocking incident. I’m being kept updated on developments and ask that we give the police the space they need to investigate."

Liverpool great Robbie Fowler has said: "Heartbreaking news .. absolutely sickened with what's happened here in Liverpool."

The parade in Liverpool had been going on for hours and was weaving its way through the city, heading towards the Strand after covering several miles. It began just after 2pm but was set to hit its peak until the early evening.

The Reds secured the title several weeks ago when they beat , leading to incredible celebrations within Anfield. The club were then presented with the trophy on the Premier League's final day before joining with their fans to cap what has been a stellar season.
