BBC viewers say same thing minutes in to Davina McCall's dating show

BBC viewers were quick to spot an issue just minutes into Davina McCall’s dating show as they fumed “What is this?”

The new series, Stranded on Honeymoon Island, follows 12 singletons as they embark on a speed dating ceremony unlike any other.

With the dates lasting only five minutes, relationship experts then pair off the couples together for a faux wedding ceremony. The big twist is that the contestants have no idea who they're marrying until they walk down the aisle.

During tonight’s episode (September 3) things kicked off with a speed dating event where the singles, following five minutes of chat, are asked to select their favourites. The final couplings are then settled on by professional matchmakers.

In the next stage of the show the pairs attend their faux wedding ceremony. The bride in a white dress and veil, walks down the aisle not knowing who is standing at the altar waiting to marry her.

Once castaway, couples then have to live together in a basic beach hut, with no electricity, a double bed and just a shower and loo.

Viewers got to see the first three couples get matched and first up is marketing manager Hannah, 29, a ‘party girl’ and Sam, 30, who runs his own fashion brand.

Next to be paired are lesbian couple Helen, 35, a radio presenter who describes herself as an ‘Essex girl and raging lesbian’ and Abby, 32, a sports coach and ‘player on and off the field’.

The third and final couple are Mae, 30, a recruitment consultant and Moray, 28, a property developer.

Mae is a self-confessed diva who tells the audience of the fate that befell her last love. Looking misty eyed at the camera she reveals “there was an unfortunate accident where he fell… into his colleague’s vagina”.

All three couples seemed to be happy with their chosen partners and wasted no time throwing themselves into the experiment.

As expected it didn’t take long for fans to rush to social media to share their reaction as many spotted a problem with the format and compared the dating show to Channel 4’s hit dating show Married At First Sight.

One fan wrote on X, formally known as X: “So this is married at first sight, but they've just jumped straight to the honeymoon ?#StrandedOnHoneymoonIsland.”

Another admitted: “This looks like a cross between Married At First Sight and Love Island. #StrandedOnHoneymoonIsland.”

A third fumed: “What is this? Married at First S*** #StrandedOnHoneymoonIsland.” One pointed out: “Love is blind, love island and MAFS having a first date ...kinda show #StrandedOnHoneymoonIsland.”

Another commented: “#StrandedOnHoneymoonIsland Why can't TV Channels come up with something totally different to what has gone before?”

Meanwhile one fan added: “I guess #StrandedOnHoneymoonIsland will fill the #MAFSUK gap until MAFSUK returns.”

Stranded on Honeymoon Island airs on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday night at 9pm on BBC One and on the BBC iPlayer
