Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday met Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in New Delhi and pressed for expediting the proposed railway line between Kokrajhar and Gelephu Mindfulness City in Bhutan.

During the meeting, held at the Railway Minister’s residence, Sarma also sought the introduction of three new Amrit Bharat trains to and from Assam and the creation of a new rail route connecting Umrangso in Dima Hasao district with Lanka in Hojai district. He said these measures would enhance regional connectivity and boost economic activity across the state.

The Chief Minister further requested additional stoppages for major trains passing through Assam to improve convenience for local passengers.

According to Sarma, the Railway Minister “kindly consented” to the proposals discussed, including the Kokrajhar–Gelephu project, new train services, and enhanced halts.

“The Minister responded positively and assured that the Railway Ministry would implement the suggested measures,” an official statement said.

Later, Sarma shared details of the meeting on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), writing:

“Had a very productive meeting with Hon’ble Minister Shri @AshwiniVaishnaw Ji this morning. We deliberated on key issues to expand the railway’s footprint in Assam to enhance overall connectivity for our people. Three new Amrit Bharat trains to and from Assam, a new rail link from picturesque Umrangso to Lanka in Hojai district, expediting work on the new Kokrajhar–Gelephu line to Bhutan, and more stoppages in Assam for all major trains transiting through the state. Happy to share that the Hon’ble Minister has kindly consented to these action items.”
