In a vast and diverse country like India, road conditions can change in an instant. Keeping this in mind, Google has introduced several new safety and traffic alert features for India in Google Maps. Google uses its AI and local partners to make millions of updates daily in India to provide users with the most accurate and up-to-date information.
The company has partnered with traffic police in 18 cities across the country, ensuring immediate updates on road closures and other obstructions. Indian users report approximately 150,000 real-time disruptions daily. Google has introduced three new features for Indian users on its Google Maps app. Let's explore each of these features in detail.
Proactive Traffic Alerts
Google Maps now offers "Proactive Traffic Alerts." This feature will alert users in advance if there is a traffic jam or a major delay ahead. This will let users know the extent of the delay and how it will impact their ETA (Estimated Time of Arrival). This feature is currently being rolled out to Android users on highways and main roads in Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru.
Alerts for Accident-Prone Areas
In addition, a new feature called Accident-Prone Area Alerts has also been introduced in Google Maps. This feature will warn you through visual and voice alerts when you approach an area with a high incidence of accidents. It has been rolled out in Gurugram, Cyberabad, Chandigarh, and Faridabad.
Speed Limits Will Be Visible in Real Time
Speed limits are posted on many roads and main streets, but due to the lack of road signage, people are often unaware of the actual speed limit. This often results in people being issued fines for unintentional overspeeding. Google has now addressed this issue. The designated speed limit will now be displayed on the Google Maps navigation screen. This feature is currently being implemented in nine Indian cities: Faridabad, Ghaziabad, Gurugram, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, and Noida.
Partnership with NHAI
Google has partnered with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to provide users with real-time information about highway closures, repairs, and roadside amenities (such as rest areas, public toilets, petrol pumps, and food joints).
